Our Story: CommUnity Nexus

From Radio Operators to Community Builders

CommUnity Nexus began in 2015 with a small group of ham radio operators who wanted to do more than just meet and talk about radio. We launched DSARC – the Do Something Amateur Radio Club – because we were enthusiastic, community-minded, and ready to get outside, get involved, and make a difference.

While other clubs focused on presentations and knowledge-sharing, we wanted to focus on action: helping our community prepare, supporting public safety, and having fun through events and outings. By 2018, we were participating in or hosting over 20 events each year—from parades and races to field exercises, trainings, and community outings.

Growth and Evolution

As our members worked together, we discovered we had more in common than just ham radio. Many of us were already passionate about STEM, robotics, rocketry, electronics, IT, engineering, security, preparedness, and safety. We realized that ham radio is the perfect gateway into many of these fields.

We also saw the natural tie-in with preparedness and safety training—not just radio skills, but also CPR, First Aid, AED, and Stop the Bleed programs. These ensure our community is ready for emergencies of all kinds, from wildfires to winter storms.

Building the Future

CommUnity Nexus is about doing something—for ourselves, for each other, and for the future. From teaching kids robotics, to training neighbors in preparedness, to supporting public safety with radio communications, we are building a stronger, smarter, and more resilient rural community.

We want to equip our community with knowledge, skills, and confidence—to both embrace new technology and to be ready for whatever challenges come our way.
